Q: Why all the attention about the former convent now?
A: The building, having been vacant for years, is in such a state of disrepair that it has become necessary to address related safety issues. A fence was recently put up around the perimeter after the collapse of one of the first floor windows.
Q: Why was a demolition permit applied for?
A: The Parish looks to determine if such an option will ever be open to potentially pursue. Sadly, in the structural evaluations performed in 2008 and 2014, our consulting company recommended demolition both times.
Q: Why does the Parish not renovate the structure?
A: Current estimates from the Diocese to rehabilitate the property are in the millions of dollars. While our Parish finances are secure, we do not anticipate the means or the need to take on a renovation project of this magnitude, nor the funds required to maintain such a building, once it is restored.
Q: Why does the Parish not sell the structure?
A: Concern for the safety of the students at St. James School and the Laughlin Center precludes the option of selling the property to a business, association or private resident. Furthermore, prior offers on the property indicated even more land was needed to be purchased for proper redevelopment than just the building and green space.
Q: Isn't the Parish just looking to have more parking spaces?
A: No. Parking space at St. James is sufficient. We are required to have a certain number of parking spaces given the capacity of our church. This would be compromised, however, if extra land was sold (as explained in the answer above).
